FACULTY OF ECONOMICS

The Faculty of Economics is one of the five Faculties of the University, which is located on Gambelas Campus in Faro.

The Faculty is presently responsible for three undergraduate degrees: Economics, Business Administration and Sociology. Postgraduate degrees on offer include a Diploma for Advanced Studies in Council Administration and Regional Development together with four Master courses: MBA in General Management, MBA in Corporate Finance, MBA in Marketing and a MSc in Regional Economics and Local Development.

Our current student population stands approximately at 1200, 700 of which represent the undergraduate student body.

The Faculty prides itself on its 20-year history. Quality of education, rigour and responsibility are leading concerns. The Faculty's full awareness of the socio-economics realities and its strong connection to both business and public administration sectors, commits it to better accommodate the job market and the techno-scientific needs of society through quality education.

The Faculty is involved in research in the areas of Economics and Business Management, namely, in the fields of Tourism, Natural Resources, Planning and Regional Development, Financial and International Economics, Finance, Marketing, Sociology, Management and Law. The majority of research is carried out under the support of two existing research centres: CIDER (Research Centre for Development and Regional Economics) and CEAP (Centre for Applied Statistics and Forecasting).

UNIVERSITY OF ALGARVE

After twenty-one years of service to the community the University of Algarve has now achieved its majority recognized on account both of the growth of its physical structures and of the maturity evidenced in its teaching, administrative and research structures. Today it enjoys spacious facilities: two campuses (Penha and Gambelas) and two sites (Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António), which provide excellent study, work, research and social conditions for approximately 10.000 students, 700 teaching staff and 400 administrative staff.

THE CITY OF FARO

Faro gained the status of City in 1540. “Ossónoba” in the time of the Romans, “Harun” during the Muslim domain (finished in 1249), Faro gained its present name in the XVIII century.

Faro is the capital and the main urban centre of Algarve - the region has 400.000 inhabitants, from which approximately 42.000 are from Faro. Its capital importance is confirmed by the variety and quality of its offers: the University, public facilities, several regional services, the international airport, its historical centre and the beautiful “Ria [estuarine area] of Faro”.
