What every visitor should know
- Travel info/access to Tomar
Portugal undersigned the Schengen Agreement and, accordingly, is governed by the EU regulations.
The main Portuguese airline is TAP Air Portugal (www.flytap.pt). Many other airlines fly to Lisbon and Porto, some of them low-cost companies.
Tomar is located 130 kms north of Lisbon. Arriving at the International Airport of Lisbon, you may take a train, a bus www.rede-expressos.pt or hire a car to get to Tomar.

Itinerary by road
In Salamanca take the A62 to the border (Vilar Formoso). When entering Portugal, the road changes its name to A25.
After about 36 Kms, turn for IP2/A23 (;Portalegre; Guarda Sul"). About 200 km after taking A23 you will get to Tomar.
Take A1. After about 95 km take A23. Tomar exit is less than 20 km away.
The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar has car park with a large capacity.
All non-EU citizens should check if it is necessary to obtain a visa, which can be obtained at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in their home country. As far as participants coming from EU member states are concerned, they will be allowed entry to the country upon presentation of a valid ID card or passport.
The climate is temperate wet this region, not registrant large thermal amplitudes, especially due to the large existing forest mantle. Regarding temperature, normal values of the year in the range of 16ºC, noting in the month of January the predominance of isothermal of the 9ºC. In July, the normal values of temperature are almost always higher than 23ºC. The sunshine, and therefore the number of hours solar, varies between 2500 and the 2700.

The Portuguese currency is the EURO.
Banks in Portugal are open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 to 15.00. Currency exchanges imply the payment of a rate/commission.
Portugal also has an extensive network of Automatic Teller Machines, which enable a number of operations 24 hours a day, including drawing money with a bankcard. The maximum amount which can be drawn per day is € 200.

The pharmacies are open from Monday to Friday (9.00 to 13.00 and 15.00 to 19.00) and on Saturdays from 9.00 to 13.00. There is always pharmacy service at night and week-end.
- Telecommunications and post office
There are many telephone booths, which can be used to make international phone calls, either with coins, telephone cards, and credit or debit cards.
The Post Offices (CTT) offer fax, telex and telegram services, and are, in general, open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 18.00. It is also possible to make international collect calls, by contacting PT Portugal Telecom or Marconi.

Traditional shops (clothing, footwear and bookshops) are usually open in the morning from 10.00 to 13.00 and in the afternoon from 15.00 to 19.00 from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, these shops are usually open from 10.00 to 13.00 and are closed in the afternoon.
Shopping Centres are open everyday from 10.00 to 23.00, from Monday to Sunday. Many shops in Portugal have already adhered to the Tax-free system, which is available to every citizen outside the EU.
Tomar is today known not only for its glorious monuments of these was the Convent of Christ, but also for its potential tourist that provides the visit of numerous historical buildings, archaeological relics, tours by its luxuriant gardens and fresh and also over Nabão river.
The major monuments are: Convent of Christ; Castle of the Templars; Pegões aqueduct. The vast majority of monuments and museums is open from 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 17.00. They usually close on Mondays.
The official language is Portuguese. English is understood and spoken by the many inhabitants, as well as Spanish.
