Call for applicants
The Portuguese Regional Science Association (APDR), is pleased to announce the organisation of the Sustainable Regional Development Academy which will be held in Porto, Portugal at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), from 8 -9 July 2025, just before the 2025 APDR conference (10-11 July) at Universidade Portucalense.
The Sustainable Regional Development Academy will be organized for a limited number of participants.
The Academy is designed as a springboard for successful academic careers by examining important issues such as publishing, reviewing, and collaborative research; the event also provides networking opportunities.
During the Sustainable Regional Development Academy, the participants will:
To undertake this tasks participant will be provided with secondary data about the city of Porto, a questionnaire to do during the study visit and a synthesis presentation of the main methods and the way to use them using adequate software platforms (Location Measures, Land Aptitudes, Cluster Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Generalized Q Analysis, Network Analysis, Spatial Econometric Analysis, Base Model, Input Output Model, Spatial Interaction Model).
The Sustainable Regional Development Academy will be organized for a limited number of participants.
The Academy is designed as a springboard for successful academic careers by examining important issues such as publishing, reviewing, and collaborative research; the event also provides networking opportunities.
During the Sustainable Regional Development Academy, the participants will:
- Produce a characterization and diagnosis of the City of Porto.
- Define strategic sustainable development for the city of Porto and design an evaluate one of the projects of the strategy.
- Identify a research question that could help the implementation of the project and try to respond it with the data available and adequate methods.
- Present and discuss the solution to the identified problem.

Format
The Sustainable Regional Development Academy has the following structure:
- Lectures on Location Measures, Land Aptitudes, Cluster Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Generalized Q Analysis, Network Analysis, Spatial Econometric Analysis, Base Model, Input Output Model, Spatial Interaction Model.
- Technical Visit to problematic areas of Porto.
- Working groups sustainable tourism in urban areas, mobility and left behind people and places, migrant integration and cultural identity of places.
- Students’ Presentations Sessions where they have the opportunity to present and discuss their research projects with the instructors and other senior researchers.
Goal
The goal of the Sustainable Development Academy is to provide the participants methodological skills and research experience. It will encourage meaningful discussions and exchange of ideas between the participants and field experts, fostering long-term academic collaboration.

The number of participants is limited to approximately 25.

Participants who want to participate in the Sustainable Regional Development Academy should submit their application via email (apdr@apdr.pt) by 15 March 2025 (midnight CET) and include (in PDF format):
