Sanlúcar de Guadiana

sanlucar1A white hill greets the river as it drops towards its encounter with the Atlantic. This is Sanlúcar de Guadiana, a small municipality with a scarce 420 inhabitants who have lived, and still live, watching the river that tumed it into a first-rate strategic plaza and commercial centre in the 19th century. Today, it provides shelter to numerous recreational boats in its small river port.

It interested in a bit of tourism, a day trip from Sanlúcar worthy of a visit is the Parrish of Las Flores. Simply walking through it steep streets amongst its white-washed houses is enough to soak up its spirit. The same beauty extends beyond the village itself, in the outskirts where windmills dot the landscape.

Somewhat more modern, bet based on the same principals, are the large wind-powered mill installations, generators of clean energy and riches that are undergoing a definite boom and represent one of the main means of development for the entire region.

A short history of Sanlucar

sanlucar2Various peoples have settled along the length of the River Guadiana; and in this area, the earliest signs of human presence date from the Bronze Age. Also present here were the Romans and Visigoths, who went upstream as far as Mérida, but it wasn’t until the Arab occupation that the first permanent settlements were created. Present-day Sanlúcar was founded in the 13th century, when Sancho II of Portugal wrested the area from the Muslims and built a fortification. Since the 14th century the village has belonged to Spain.

Its port has been a major trading hub, through which commodities such as rice, lead and wood have passed, although today its value lies in the charm it holds for tourists.
