TRAVEL INFO/ACCESS TO FARO
Portugal undersigned the Schengen Agreement and, accordingly, is governed by the EU regulations.
Faro is located 300 km south of Lisbon, well connected with all major cities in Europe through the national and international airline companies. It is possible to get to Faro by plane from anywhere in the world, either directly or through transit connections. The Faro Airport (FAO, phone no. +351.289.800.800; +351.289.800.801; +351.289.800.617) is located only 4 km west of the centre of the city.
The main Portuguese carrier is TAP Air Portugal (www.tap.pt), which has offices in all the cities it flies to. Also PGA Portugalia Airlines (www.flypga.com) flies to many other national and international cities. There are in addition many other international companies, which fly to Faro, namely low cost fares (www.flybe.com ; www.jet2.com ; www.easyjet.com ; www.aerlingus.com ; www.virgin-express.com ; www.bmibaby.com)
On arrival by plane, passengers can travel to the city centre by collective transport - EVA buses. For these the traveler can obtain timetable information in the ICEP balcony.
There are also taxis at the airport, and the trip to the city centre costs approximately € 7. However, taxis charge an additional 20% on Monday to Friday from 22.00 to 06.00, and on Saturday and Sunday. An additional surcharge of € 1,50 may also be made for extra luggage, although wheelchairs and other equipment required by physically handicapped people are transported free of charge. The price is the same, if 1, 2, 3 or 4 people travel in the same taxi.
The railway station offers 4 daily national connections trains to Lisbon, where there are 2 daily international connections, one through Paris and another through Madrid. For more information visit www.cp.pt.
To access Faro by car you can use the connections N431 (Huelva, Spain) and A22 (Via do Infante, Portugal).
VISA
All non-EU citizens should check if it is necessary to obtain a visa, which can be obtained at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in their home country. As far as participants coming from EU member states are concerned, they will be allowed entry to the country upon presentation of a valid ID card or passport.
LOCAL CLIMATE
The climate in the Algarve region of Portugal is mild, with little rainfall and plenty of sun throughout the year, making it an ideal year-round destination. Summers are hot and sunny, but are often refreshed by cooling breezes off the coast; the farther west you go, the windier it becomes. July and August are the hottest months of the year. The Algarve gets most of its rainfall over the winter months; rain is rare between June and September. The Atlantic Ocean is cold but becomes gradually slightly warmer to the east, thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean.
PORTUGUESE TIME
Portugal has the same time as GMT (one hour earlier than the Continental European Time - CET).
CURRENCY
The Portuguese currency is the EURO.
Banks in Portugal are open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 to 15.00. Currency exchanges imply the payment of a rate/commission. Portugal also has an extensive network of Automatic Teller Machines, which enable a number of operations 24 hours a day, including drawing money with a bankcard. The maximum amount which can be drawn per day is € 200.

Hospitals have emergency services open 24 hours a day. The one main hospitals in the city are:

Pharmacies are open from Monday to Friday (9.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00), on Saturday they are open from 9.00 to 13.00. There are always pharmacies open during the weekend, and at night.

TELECOMMUNICATION AND POST OFFICE
There are many telephone booths, which can be used to make international phone calls, either with coins, telephone cards, and credit or debit cards. The Post Offices (CTT - Correios e Telecomunicações de Portugal) offer fax, telex and telegram services, and are, in general, open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 18.00.
It is also possible to make international collect calls, by contacting PT Portugal Telecom or Marconi.
SHOPS
Traditional shops (clothing, footwear and bookshops) are usually open in the morning from 10.00 to 13.00 and in the afternoon from 15.00 to 19.00 from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, these shops are usually open from 10.00 to 13.00 and are closed in the afternoon.
Shopping Centres are open everyday from 10.00 to 23.00, from Monday to Sunday. Many shops in Portugal have already adhered to the Tax-free system, which is available to every citizen outside the EU.
BEACHES
One of the greatest riches of the Algarve lies in the golden sandy beaches that almost invariably offer a varied range of service infrastructures and nautical sports.
The sea temperature is in general cooler than that of the Mediterranean but in summer it can attain 21-22°C, the sea being colder along the coast towards Sagres than towards the easternmost point of the Algarve.

MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS
Most monuments and museums are open from 10.00 to 12.30 and from 14.00 to 17.00. They are closed on Monday and holidays; on Sunday, admission is usually free.
CULTURE
In the year of 2005, Faro is the National Capital of Culture. During this year several cultural events are programmed, which encompass many different cultural areas and take place in different locations in the city of Faro and other localities in the Algarve.
During the 17, 18 and 19th of September there will be the presentation of the Platform of Portuguese Contemporary Dance.

The official language is Portuguese. English is understood and spoken by many inhabitants, as well as Spanish.
