TRAVEL INFO / ACCESS TO VISEU
Portugal undersigned the Schengen Agreement and, accordingly, is governed by the EU regulations.
Almost equally distant from its frontier with Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, Viseu is a centrally located city in Portugal, about 90 Kms far from Aveiro, Coimbra or Covilhã, 130 kms from Lisbon and 120 Kms form Oporto. You can get to Viseu by road (IP3 or IP5) or by train (train station of Nelas or Mangualde).
It is not possible to get to Viseu directly by plane. The best international connections can be made from the Lisbon or the Oporto Airports. (See car rental, below)
Itinerary by road
»From Lisbon
Take the highway A1, direction North and get out when you get to “Viseu” exit. Then take IP3 until the exit “Viseu SUL”
»From Oporto
Take the highway A1, direction to Lisbon and get out when you get to “Viseu” exit. Then take IP5 until one of the following exits nºs: 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18.
»From Castelo-Branco/Portalegre
Take A23. When you get to Guarda take the IP5 (A25) until you get to Viseu.
»From Spain
Passing the frontier in Vilar Formoso, you can take IP5 (A25) and drive until Viseu.

AIRPORTS
The main Portuguese carrier is TAP Air Portugal (www.tap.pt), which has offices in all the cities it flies to. Also PGA Portugalia Airlines (www.flypga.com) flies to many other national and international cities. There are in addition many other international and low cost companies, which fly to Portugal (www.flybe.com ; www.jet2.com ; www.easyjet.com ; www.aerlingus.com ; www.virgin-express.com ; www.bmibaby.com).
The railway station offers 4 daily national connections trains to Lisbon, where there are 2 daily international connections, one through Paris and another through Madrid. For more information visit www.cp.pt.
VISA
All non-EU citizens should check if it is necessary to obtain a visa, which can be obtained at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in their home country. As far as participants coming from EU member states are concerned, they will be allowed entry to the country upon presentation of a valid ID card or passport.
LOCAL CLIMATE
The climate in Viseu Region is characteristic for its very dry and hot summers and cold wet winters. In September temperatures are expected to be mild.
PORTUGUESE TIME
Portugal has the same time as GMT (one hour earlier than the Continental European Time - CET).
CURRENCY
The Portuguese currency is the EURO.
Banks in Portugal are open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 to 15.00. Currency exchanges imply the payment of a rate/commission. Portugal also has an extensive network of Automatic Teller Machines, which enable a number of operations 24 hours a day, including drawing money with a bankcard. The maximum amount which can be drawn per day is € 200.

Pharmacies are open from Monday to Friday (9.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00), on Saturday they are open from 9.00 to 13.00. There are always pharmacies open during the weekend, and at night.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND POST OFFICE
There are many telephone booths, which can be used to make international phone calls, either with coins, telephone cards, and credit or debit cards. The Post Offices (CTT - Correios e Telecomunicações de Portugal) offer fax, telex and telegram services, and are, in general, open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 18.00.
It is also possible to make international collect calls, by contacting PT Portugal Telecom or Marconi.
SHOPS
Traditional shops (clothing, footwear and bookshops) are usually open in the morning from 10.00 to 13.00 and in the afternoon from 15.00 to 19.00 from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, these shops are usually open from 10.00 to 13.00 and are closed in the afternoon.
Shopping Centres are open everyday from 10.00 to 23.00, from Monday to Sunday. Many shops in Portugal have already adhered to the Tax-free system, which is available to every citizen outside the EU.
MOUNTAINS
Viseu is within a region of mountains, a natural green paradise. Mountains are the appropriate place for mountaineering, canoeing or resting in a thermal spa, such as Monfortinho, São Pedro do Sul, Caldas de Felqueira, Carvalhelhos, Pedras Salgadas, and Vidago, with its magnificent park, swimming pools and golf course.

The daily cost of a passengers car - group "B" (Renault Clio or similar model) to circulate around Viseu Region rounds the 40 €. This price includes unlimited kilometres, coverings, supplement of circulation and IVA.
If you pick up the car in the Airport and deliver it in Viseu it will cost you around 150€ (from Lisbon Airport) or 70€ (from Oporto Airport). On your return to the airport these prices round the 120€ (to Lisbon Airport) or 80€ (to Oporto Airport).
